BUILDING PRACTICES

Geo-Thermal Heating and Cooling
Geothermal systems are able to transfer heat to and from the ground with minimal use of electricity. The constant temperature of the earth below the frost line is ~ 50 degrees F. There are a variety of ways to transfer this temperature throughout the house. One way is through a water-to-water heat pump heated water is run through either a baseboard or in-floor system. The term water-to-air signifies that the heat pump is designed for forced air applications and indicates that water is the source of heat and can be used for cooling as well.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems
Solar electricity transfers the sun’s energy into electricity through photovoltaic panels. All of the systems we install are a grid-tied system. This means it is connected to the local power grid/company and you do not have to have battery backup (unless desired). The home uses the electricity it produces and either sells extra electricity back to the power company or borrows the little amount the home may need. The goal, of course, is to size the PV array as accurately as possible so the home’s annual electric bill is zero.

Reclaimed Lumber
The use of reclaimed or re-used lumber is obvious in its benefits, as it reduces the number of trees that are cut down for construction. It also reduces the amount of deconstructed or demolished lumber that most times ends up in landfills. Our barn project has the highest amount of reclaimed lumber. The entire exterior and part of the interior came from reclaimed snow fences in Wyoming. For other projects we use as many materials from Resource, a local used building materials yard, as we possibly can.

Green (Living) Roofs
A green roof nurtures an eco-system that produces oxygen and filters storm water, as opposed to a traditional roof that creates heat as the sun is absorbed into it. Green roofs in Colorado are planted with drought resistant plants. Our first green roof will be installed on a garage and will blend into the hillside.
